Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disease of unknown cause and the most common type of dementia. Any area of the brain could be affected by this disease. The hippocampus is usually the first part of the brain to become dysfunctional. This part is involved in learning and memory. This area has been one of the most studied by scientists around the world for the past 100 years.
Why is this area of the brain called the hippocampus?
Neuroanatomists have found that this area of the brain has the appearance of a hippocampus. Because of this phenomenon, neuroscientists decided to name this area of the brain the hippocampus. In some parts of the world, Hippocampus is another name for a Seahorse.
For the past twenty years, my research interest has focused primarily on studying the functions of the hippocampus. I have transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. Our research team is focusing on studying how neurons can communicate with each other by examining the behaviour of these mice. Because of my interest in the hippocampus and my daughter's fondness for horses, I decided to call my company Neuro-Hippocampal Research.
